Creating a clear, intuitive wayfinding system to support seamless navigation in one of South America’s busiest airports.
Value Delivered
Project Overview
In 2019, 1PAX was commissioned by Nuevo Pudahuel to design the wayfinding and signage system for Santiago International Airport (AMB), a major aviation hub serving up to 30 million passengers annually. The scope focused on developing a coherent visual guidance strategy across a large-scale terminal environment, ensuring consistency, clarity, and ease of navigation for both domestic and international travelers within a complex, high-traffic infrastructure.
Key Challenge
The primary challenge was to deliver a wayfinding system capable of guiding diverse passenger profiles through a 200,000 m² terminal with efficiency and minimal cognitive effort. The system needed to balance international best practices with local operational requirements, integrate multilingual communication, and strictly comply with the ADP Graphics Manual, while remaining legible, intuitive, and adaptable to changing passenger flows.
Our Approach
1PAX developed a comprehensive signage strategy based on clear visual hierarchies, color coding, and standardized graphic rules. Flight-related instructions were designed using black text on yellow backgrounds, while service information employed white text on blue backgrounds, ensuring immediate recognition. The system integrated ADP lettering standards alongside VINCI visual references, with precise placement of arrows, text, pictograms, alphanumeric codes, and time charts. All signage content was presented in Spanish with English translations, reinforcing accessibility and international usability.
