A centralized terminal vision designed to elevate passenger experience and position Sofia Airport as a 5-Star regional hub.
Value Delivered
Project Overview
From 2023 to 2025, 1PAX, in association with IPA EOOD and EGIS AVIA, led the architectural design for the expansion and reorganization of Sofia Airport. Commissioned by SOF Connect, the project combines the refurbishment of Terminal 2 with the development of a new international Terminal 3, delivering a unified airport system of approximately 110,000 m² designed to accommodate up to 15 million passengers annually.
Key Challenge
Sofia Airport’s ambition to achieve a 5-Star Label required a fundamental rethinking of passenger processing, spatial organization, and service quality. The challenge was to centralize and streamline flows across existing and new terminals, significantly upgrade international processing facilities, and integrate a high-quality commercial and hospitality offer—while maintaining operational continuity and meeting stringent sustainability objectives.
Our Approach
1PAX developed a fully centralized terminal concept, placing passenger clarity and comfort at the core of the design strategy. The new Terminal 3 is conceived as a dedicated international terminal with its own pier, while Terminal 2 is refurbished and reorganized to integrate seamlessly into the overall system.
The project introduces entirely new baggage reclaim areas, upgraded security checkpoints, and modernized immigration and emigration facilities to improve efficiency and reduce processing times. A strong emphasis is placed on commercial vitality, with an extensive retail offer and a vibrant food and beverage hall featuring bars, cafés, quick-service restaurants, and an apron-facing terrace that enhances dwell time and passenger experience. Sustainability principles are embedded throughout the design, supporting long-term operational efficiency and environmental performance.
