A precise and elegant control tower design supporting the growth of a strategic aeronautical hub.
Value Delivered
Project Overview
Delivered in 2020, the Châteauroux ATCT & MRO project forms part of an ambitious initiative led by the Centre-Val de Loire Region to strengthen the aeronautical industry around Châteauroux Airport. The development includes the construction of a large multifunctional maintenance hangar and a new air traffic control tower, required to support expanded maintenance and operational activities. The project was awarded through a design competition to a multidisciplinary consortium led by Calvo Tran Van, with 1PAX responsible for the architectural design of the new control tower, alongside SETEC for engineering.
Key Challenge
The introduction of a 10,000 m² maintenance hangar fundamentally altered the operational landscape of the airport, making a new control tower essential. The challenge was to design a highly technical air traffic control facility that meets stringent regulatory and operational requirements, while remaining compact, clear in expression, and well integrated into its surroundings.
Our Approach
1PAX developed a control tower design defined by clarity, restraint, and efficiency. The architectural concept is based on a clean and simple core, ensuring optimal functionality for air traffic control operations while maintaining a calm and legible presence within the airport environment. The design balances technical rigor with architectural elegance, focusing on proportion, materiality, and integration rather than formal excess. This approach ensured full compliance with aviation standards while reinforcing the coherence of the overall MRO development.
