A flexible retail framework designed to diversify airport commerce and empower independent brands.

Project Overview
In 2019, 1PAX was commissioned by Vinci Airports to develop a commercial design concept for Lyon Airport, responding to an innovative retail strategy aimed at diversifying the terminal’s commercial offer. The brief focused on creating a “ready-made shop” shell that could accommodate short-term sub-concession contracts, enabling smaller and independent brands to enter an environment traditionally dominated by large international retailers.
Key Challenge
Airport retail environments often suffer from visual and experiential uniformity due to standardized global brands and rigid fit-out models. Lyon Airport sought to break this monotony by introducing a system that could adapt quickly to different tenants, brand identities, and spatial requirements—without requiring extensive construction works or long implementation times.
Our Approach
1PAX proposed a modular furniture-based retail concept capable of generating multiple shop typologies within a single architectural framework. The system was designed to be fully customizable, allowing each tenant to express a distinct atmosphere while maintaining overall coherence within the terminal. A key feature of the proposal was a mobile partition system that enabled the retail surface to expand or contract, adapting the shop’s footprint to operational needs and commercial strategies.
