A scalable and sustainable airport vision designed to support long-term growth and operational excellence.
Value Delivered
Project Overview
In 2017, 1PAX was awarded second prize in the international competition for the new Lanzhou International Airport, commissioned by the Lanzhou Airport Authority and ECADI. The project encompassed the development of a comprehensive airport masterplan as well as the architectural design of the Terminal Building. Working in partnership with ECADI and AVIC, 1PAX addressed an infrastructure of metropolitan scale, planned to accommodate 30 million passengers in Phase 1 and up to 46 million passengers in subsequent phases.
Key Challenge
The main challenge was to conceive a new airport capable of supporting significant long-term growth while maintaining clarity, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. The project required the coordination of complex airside and landside systems, future-proof capacity planning, and a terminal architecture flexible enough to adapt to evolving operational and passenger needs.
Our Approach
1PAX developed an integrated masterplan covering airside parking stands, apron taxiways, cargo and freight facilities, runway configuration, and the positioning of the air traffic control tower. Equal emphasis was placed on landside accessibility, passenger flows, and a long-term real estate strategy to support non-aeronautical development.
For the Terminal Building, 1PAX proposed a contemporary architectural concept grounded in sustainability, modularity, and phased expansion. The terminal layout was designed to ensure seamless operations for passengers, visitors, and airport personnel, with clear circulation, intuitive wayfinding, and adaptable structural systems. Sustainability principles informed both planning and architecture, enabling efficient resource use and long-term environmental performance.
