Optimizing capacity and passenger experience through culturally rooted design and strategic terminal expansion.
Value Delivered
Project Overview
In 2020, 1PAX supported Vinci Airports in the winning concession proposal for Papeete Faa’a International Airport, Tahiti’s primary international gateway. Serving nearly 2 million passengers annually, the airport plays a vital role in connecting French Polynesia to international and regional destinations. The project focused on defining a clear development strategy to improve passenger flow, service levels, and long-term operational performance, while reinforcing the airport’s strong cultural identity.
Key Challenge
Passenger traffic at Papeete Airport is characterized by pronounced peak periods, with high-density international arrivals and departures concentrated in the morning and shorter departures in the evening, while domestic traffic remains evenly distributed throughout the day. These dynamics created pressure on existing facilities and highlighted the need for short-term capacity expansion. The challenge was to address these constraints while maintaining operational continuity, improving comfort, and controlling energy consumption and operating costs.
Our Approach
1PAX carried out detailed capacity and peak-hour studies based on a representative operational day, identifying critical bottlenecks and prioritizing targeted expansion. The architectural strategy combined terminal extensions and the addition of boarding bridges to improve passenger comfort, aircraft interface efficiency, and overall service quality.
The design approach integrated traditional Polynesian architectural elements, translating local culture, materials, and spatial openness into a contemporary airport environment. Renovation of existing spaces was combined with upgrades to building systems, improving energy efficiency and reducing long-term operating costs while enhancing spatial quality.
