Fuzhou New International Airport – Passenger Terminal & Rail Integration

A multimodal airport city vision combining aviation capacity, rail connectivity, and long-term urban development.

Value Delivered

The proposal delivered a clear, scalable vision for Fuzhou’s new international gateway, positioning the airport as both a transportation hub and a driver of urban development. By integrating air, rail, and road systems within a cohesive masterplan, the project supported efficient operations, strong connectivity, and sustainable long-term growth. The second-prize recognition highlighted the strength of its multimodal strategy, capacity optimization, and future-oriented airport city concept.

Project Overview

In 2017, 1PAX participated in the international design competition for the new passenger terminal at Fuzhou New International Airport, awarded second prize. The project was developed within a multidisciplinary team led by ECADI (East China Architecture Design Institute) and AVIC CAPDI (Aviation Industry Corporation of China – China Aviation Planning and Construction Development), acting as Lead Designers for both the terminal architecture and the extension of Fuzhou’s city rail network. The proposal addressed a major new airport infrastructure designed to serve up to 25 million passengers annually.

Key Challenge

The competition required reconciling high-capacity aviation infrastructure with seamless multimodal connectivity and long-term urban development. The challenge was to maximize airside efficiency—particularly aircraft parking capacity—while creating a generous, flexible landside environment capable of evolving into a future “airport city” integrated with regional transport networks.

Our Approach

The team developed a comprehensive masterplan that integrated the new passenger terminal with existing road systems and a direct connection to the extended city rail network. The terminal layout was designed to optimize aircraft parking stands and airside operations, while the landside strategy established a strong interface with the rail station as a catalyst for urban development.

The masterplan envisioned a mixed-use airport city incorporating offices, retail areas, parking facilities, conference centers, and hotels. Sustainability and long-term flexibility were central to the design approach, ensuring that buildings and public spaces could adapt to future demands, technological evolution, and phased growth.
