A metro architecture that expresses a bright future while rooting mobility in Serbian culture and identity.
Value Delivered
Project Overview
In 2022, 1PAX was commissioned by the City of Belgrade to develop the architectural design for Phase 1 of Line 1 of the Belgrade Metro Network. The project establishes a unifying architectural and experiential framework for a new metropolitan transport system, positioning the metro not only as infrastructure, but as a cultural and civic space shaping everyday urban life.
Key Challenge
The challenge was to define a strong and coherent identity for a brand-new metro network while ensuring clarity, comfort, and long-term adaptability. The design needed to balance international standards for metro infrastructure with a clear expression of local culture, language, and symbolism, all while prioritizing passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Our Approach
1PAX developed the concept of the “Golden Line,” using architecture, materials, lighting, and graphics to convey a sense of optimism and a forward-looking vision for Belgrade. Station designs emphasize Serbian cultural identity through the use of Cyrillic as the primary language, supported by Latin as a secondary system.
Signage and signaling were conceived with contemporary elegance, subtly integrating traditional Serbian patterns into a modern visual language. Each station is designed as a distinct spatial experience, while remaining part of a coherent network, ensuring intuitive wayfinding, comfort, and a strong sense of place. The design approach places the traveler at the center, focusing on legibility, atmosphere, and emotional connection.
