Project Overview
In 2019, 1PAX was commissioned by Vinci Airports Serbia / Belgrade Airport to design the new Main Fire Station for Nikola Tesla Airport. The project comprises a purpose-built, two-storey facility accommodating offices and shared spaces for airport firefighters, conceived as a critical component of the airport’s safety and emergency response infrastructure.
Key Challenge
The core challenge was to design a building that enables rapid reaction and seamless coordination in emergency situations, while clearly separating functions with distinct environmental and technical requirements. The fire station needed to combine robust operational efficiency, firefighter well-being, and long-term durability within a demanding airport context.
Our Approach
1PAX organized the building into two clearly defined zones. The living and working areas were designed as a thermally insulated volume, providing comfortable conditions for offices, rest spaces, and shared facilities. In contrast, the fire truck hangar was conceived as a naturally ventilated space, optimized for vehicle readiness and fast deployment.
A carefully designed internal connection links the two zones while remaining isolated, ensuring both functional efficiency and environmental control. Circulation paths and spatial layouts were developed to minimize response times, allowing firefighters to move swiftly from rest or work areas to operational positions.
