Félix Eboué Airport New Terminal

Expanding a tropical gateway through a sustainable, service-oriented terminal strategy.

Value Delivered

The project delivers a resilient, future-ready terminal that significantly elevates passenger experience while diversifying airport services. By combining functional expansion with a strong sustainable vision, the new terminal supports operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, and long-term adaptability. The result strengthens Félix Eboué Cayenne Airport’s role as a modern, climate-responsive gateway for French Guiana, aligned with international standards and local realities

Project Overview

In 2023, 1PAX was commissioned by EDEIS COLAS, in collaboration with Ingerop, to design the expansion and transformation of Félix Eboué Cayenne Airport’s passenger terminal. The project responds to the airport’s ambition to raise service quality and significantly enhance the overall user experience, while reinforcing the terminal’s capacity and functional diversity within a rapidly evolving regional context.

Key Challenge

The main challenge was to expand the terminal’s capacity and services without compromising operational continuity, while ensuring the project remained fully adapted to the climatic, environmental, and urban conditions of French Guiana. The intervention needed to improve passenger comfort, integrate new public and support functions, and embed sustainability as a core design driver rather than a technical add-on.

Our Approach

1PAX developed a comprehensive architectural proposal combining targeted expansion of the existing terminal with the creation of new complementary facilities. The project includes the extension of more than 2,000 m² of the current building—encompassing the main hall, boarding lounges, and border control areas—to improve capacity, flow, and comfort. In parallel, a new 3,000 m² covered area was designed to consolidate key passenger and airport services, including a health center, food court, car rental facilities, parking interfaces, airport support spaces, and offices. The architectural and spatial organization prioritizes clarity, accessibility, and intuitive movement, reinforcing the terminal as a coherent and welcoming gateway. Sustainability was embedded throughout the design, with the integration of solar panels, natural ventilation strategies, rainwater harvesting systems, and additional energy-efficiency measures tailored to the tropical climate.
