Improvement of the Peru Plaza Food Court – Look & Feel

Transforming a landside food court into a high-capacity, comfortable, and well-organized public space ahead of a major international event.

Value Delivered

The project significantly upgraded the food court’s functionality and atmosphere, delivering measurable improvements in capacity, comfort, lighting quality, acoustics, and spatial legibility. The renewed Peru Plaza Food Court successfully accommodated increased passenger volumes during peak periods and major events, while offering a more pleasant and efficient experience for users and operators alike. The intervention reinforced the airport’s landside amenities as a key component of the overall passenger journey.

Project Overview

Built in 2020, this project followed 1PAX’s winning entry in the design competition organized by Lima Airport Partners in October 2018 to renovate the landside food court of Jorge Chávez International Airport. Commissioned by Lima Airport Partners and OSITRAN, the intervention focused on the architectural redesign of the Peru Plaza Food Court, a 1,030 m² public space accommodating over 600 seats. The project responded to an urgent need to upgrade capacity and quality in anticipation of the Pan-American Games, which were expected to generate a significantly higher passenger influx than usual.

Key Challenge

The existing food court was no longer able to meet peak demand in terms of capacity, comfort, and spatial clarity. The challenge was to substantially increase seating and improve overall performance—acoustic, lighting, and spatial organization—while ensuring ease of maintenance and operational efficiency for the airport operator, all within a constrained landside environment.

Our Approach

1PAX developed a comprehensive architectural redesign focused on both user experience and operational robustness. The proposal reinforced seating capacity while carefully reorganizing layouts to improve circulation, visibility, and comfort. Particular attention was given to acoustic treatment and lighting design to reduce noise levels and create a more welcoming atmosphere. Materials, furniture, and spatial arrangements were selected to balance durability, ease of maintenance, and visual coherence, ensuring long-term performance in a high-traffic public space.
