Expanding gate capacity through a carefully phased intervention integrated seamlessly into an active terminal.
Value Delivered
Project Overview
Between 2017 and 2020, 1PAX was commissioned by Aéroport de la Côte d’Azur to design the expansion of boarding gate facilities at Terminal 1 of Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. Developed in collaboration with SETEC, the project addressed the extension of the terminal through the creation of a new boarding lounge and two additional contact stands, supporting an airport handling up to 5 million passengers. The intervention formed part of a broader effort to modernize aircraft interfaces and improve operational efficiency.
Key Challenge
The principal challenge was to increase boarding capacity and upgrade aircraft stands while maintaining full terminal operations throughout construction. The airport’s high traffic levels required a phased delivery strategy that preserved passenger capacity and service quality over a prolonged construction period, all within the spatial and operational constraints of an existing terminal.
Our Approach
1PAX developed an architectural solution focused on continuity and integration. The extension includes a new boarding lounge and two contact stands, alongside the redesign of all aircraft stands and the replacement of passenger boarding bridges. To minimize disruption, the works were carefully staged over a five-year timeframe, allowing the terminal to remain fully operational at each phase. Architecturally, the new elements were designed to blend smoothly with the existing terminal, respecting its scale, materiality, and spatial logic, while discreetly upgrading performance and functionality.
