Transforming critical rail infrastructure into an efficient, human-centered urban oasis.
Value Delivered
Project Overview
Conceived as the masterplan for the operational heart of Qatar Railways, the Doha West Metro Depot establishes a comprehensive framework that integrates depot and maintenance facilities, stabling yards, control and training centers, power and water plants, and parking within a single, coherent vision. The project goes beyond technical coordination, redefining large-scale infrastructure as an integral and articulated piece of the city. Anchored by its relationship to the Qatar Railways headquarters, the masterplan introduces landscaped public spaces conceived as an oasis—where operational performance and urban presence coexist.
Key Challenge
The primary challenge lay in orchestrating a vast and highly technical program—defined by strict operational, security, and logistical requirements—while ensuring clarity of movement, long-term flexibility, and a dignified civic interface. The depot needed to function as a resilient and efficient backbone for the metro system, yet avoid becoming an isolated industrial enclave within the urban fabric.
Our Approach
At 1PAX, mobility infrastructure is more than engineering—it is a spatial experience shaped around people and purpose . The masterplan is structured through a clear zoning logic that separates and optimizes operational flows—trains, maintenance, staff, utilities, and visitors—while maintaining intuitive internal circulation.
A layered landscape strategy mediates between heavy infrastructure and the city. Shaded courtyards, planted buffers, and water-conscious design principles introduce environmental comfort and reduce heat gain, aligning with our commitment to embed sustainability and life-cycle thinking into every project . The oasis concept becomes both environmental infrastructure and social connector, reinforcing the identity of the headquarters and offering moments of relief within a demanding technical environment.
Functional creativity guides the architectural language: rational, durable, and adaptable structures that support evolving rail technologies while preserving operational efficiency. The result is a masterplan designed not only for today’s performance metrics, but for tomorrow’s mobility ecosystems.
