Pointe-à-Pitre Airport / T2 Extension

Expanding departure capacity to improve passenger comfort, flow efficiency, and operational resilience.

Value Delivered

The Terminal 2 extension significantly improves the airport’s ability to manage growing passenger volumes while easing pressure on Terminal 1. By optimizing flows, increasing functional capacity, and upgrading passenger amenities, the project enhances both operational performance and the quality of the travel experience. The intervention strengthens Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport’s overall resilience and positions it to better support future traffic growth within the Caribbean region.

Project Overview

Between 2023 and 2025, 1PAX was commissioned by SAGPC to design the extension of the departure lounge at Terminal 2 of Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport, in collaboration with SYSTRA and Colorado Architecture. The project forms part of the broader Projet du Centre, a strategic initiative aimed at reinforcing the airport’s capacity and improving the overall balance between terminal facilities. Serving an airport with a capacity of approximately 3 million passengers per year, the intervention targets a critical interface within the departure process.

Key Challenge

The airport faced increasing congestion, particularly within Terminal 1, driven by growing traffic and complex transfer operations. The challenge was to expand Terminal 2 in a constrained environment while improving passenger flows, accommodating remote boarding for Code C and E aircraft, and ensuring a seamless integration with the existing terminal structure—all without disrupting ongoing operations.

Our Approach

1PAX developed an architectural and functional solution focused on clarity, comfort, and operational efficiency. The project includes the construction of a new ramp, the addition of an extra floor on the southern section of Terminal 2, and the creation of new boarding facilities for remote stands. A central design principle was to streamline departure flows by redirecting passengers toward the core of the existing terminal, reinforcing legibility and reducing bottlenecks. Passenger comfort was prioritized through the design of generous waiting areas, modern sanitary facilities, enhanced services, and upgraded technical rooms, all integrated within a coherent and intuitive spatial layout.
