Euroairport Terminal

Reorganizing landside and terminal interfaces to improve capacity, clarity, and long-term passenger flow performance.

Value Delivered

The project delivered a robust framework for the modernization of EuroAirport’s East Terminal, significantly improving traffic organization, passenger flow, and overall legibility. By clarifying interfaces between landside mobility, parking, and terminal access, the proposal supports smoother operations, reduced congestion, and an enhanced passenger experience. The strategy strengthens EuroAirport’s capacity to function efficiently as a major trinational hub while preparing the infrastructure for future growth.

Project Overview

In 2018, 1PAX participated as part of a multidisciplinary team led by the Basel Mulhouse Airport Authority to support the extension and modernization of the EuroAirport terminal, with a strong focus on the South Gates and the broader East Terminal zone. The large-scale project addressed approximately 90,000 m² of terminal and interface areas within an airport serving up to 12 million passengers, forming a key trinational gateway between France, Switzerland, and Germany.

Key Challenge

The East Terminal zone faced increasing congestion and operational complexity due to growing passenger volumes, overlapping traffic flows, and fragmented access systems. The challenge was to reorganize landside and terminal circulation to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency, while ensuring the system could adapt to medium- and long-term growth without disrupting airport operations.

Our Approach

The project proposed a comprehensive reorganization of traffic and passenger flows across multiple levels of the terminal interface. Key interventions included the relocation and clarification of access routes to the Swiss and French delivery zones, the reconfiguration of parking areas for passengers, staff, VTC services, and buses, and the optimization of vehicle movements around the terminal.

At the terminal scale, the second level was redesigned to improve taxi and bus circulation, reducing conflicts and congestion. The third-level viaduct was simplified by realigning connections between the terminal and the multimodal hall, creating a clearer and more legible passenger interface. These interventions were conceived as part of a phased strategy, supporting both immediate improvements and long-term adaptability.
