Delivering a phased transformation of Serbia’s main gateway through modern design, clarity and efficiency
Value Delivered
Project Overview
1PAX was commissioned by Belgrade Airport, under the Vinci Airports concession, to design the architecture for the two main phases of the airport’s terminal expansion. Working in collaboration with Energoprojekt and partners TG Concept, Egis, and Systra, the project encompasses the construction of approximately 47,000 m² of new facilities and the refurbishment of an additional 50,000 m² of existing terminal space.
Key Challenge
The airport required a major capacity and service upgrade while maintaining full operations throughout construction. The challenge was to phase the expansion strategically, ensuring continuity of passenger processing, improving spatial legibility, and integrating new infrastructure seamlessly with existing terminal buildings—all while meeting evolving security, safety, and operational standards.
Our Approach
1PAX developed a clear, phased architectural strategy.
Phase 1 focuses on immediate capacity and flow improvements, including the addition of an arrivals gallery on the roof of the existing terminal, the construction of a new boarding pier with three MARS contact stands, and an interior refurbishment introducing a new centralized security screening area to streamline passenger processing.
Phase 2 delivers a substantial expansion of core processing areas, extending check-in halls, security screening zones, duty-free areas, and baggage delivery facilities to support long-term growth and improved passenger comfort.
Beyond the terminal itself, 1PAX was also responsible for the architectural design of several key support facilities, including the new main firefighting station, the NTA administration building, and dedicated maintenance workshops. Since the completion of the main design phases, 1PAX continues to assist Belgrade Airport through a framework contract, supporting updates to passenger processing systems on behalf of the Grantor.
